As an independent developer of games and publishing authors, here at MFG we have striven to begin involving ourselves more heavily with the gaming community as well as the fiction community, and as such we’ve stated before that we would begin reviewing authors that have begun publishing themselves.
Author Mariah Lynde’s prequel novella to her Vengeance of Avalon Series stands out as a new take on old themes. Overall review: 3/5 Please note that some spoilers are included: The novella Darkness Rises sets the theme and pace for the literary series that is in the works, Vengeance of Avalon, which is slated to be released in Summer 2015 (this is still pending). As a prequel novella, it serves to tie together some of the questions that will be persistent throughout the series as well as some serious questions that will be answered reportedly by the author herself in the first book.
The book starts us off with the legendary character, Merlin. However, in this interpretation of the ancient wizard who would make Arthur king, his name is Merlyn Escarp and he is not setting out to make a man King. Instead he comes bearing a dire warning. Having broken ancient rules between other races, he calls them together for a meeting, these races having once warred with one another, to warn them of a great peril that is to come. Met with scorn and skepticism, Merlyn sets out on a journey to prove his warnings true and to hopefully prevent the encroaching darkness. Overall, the novella is well-written in this reader’s opinion and targets a wide audience.
While there are mature themes, the book itself has reinvented an old set of fictionalized themes and found a way to make them interesting all over again. The only pitfalls the book really incurs is that of its overall transitions and description. If not for these things, overall the book would receive a fully entitled five-out-of-five. However, this is a wholly-entertaining book filled with anticipation and excitement and is highly recommended for readers to go out and purchase. It is a story that will have you eager to turn to the next page to see what's next and shall whet your appetite for the forthcoming first book of the Vengeance of Avalon series. Where to purchase Darkness Falls: While Meztrailov Fantasy Games isn’t the one who owns the rights to this particular book (it is a self-published work), that doesn’t take away from the quality of the content or the fact that it won’t be promoted.
